Caring for Bonsai Trees – What to know about root pruning?
It is well known that the secret of keeping your bonsai healthy and miniature is not just prune the branches but the trunk and roots as well. Pruning is a little scary to newcomers to the hobby of bonsai care tree as the roots of a plant pruning damages, which restricts their ability to absorb water and nutrients, while the prunings should be done carefully to ensure you're done with your desired shape.
The timing of your bonsai must cut their roots in general between one and five years after you have purchased. This period is only a guide to caring for bonsai, because some number of factors determine how long a tree needs to become rootbound in its pot, different species of trees have different levels of development different variables such as size of the pot, the development of mesh and tree age affect root growth.
When you take the tree from the pot to inspect each year, usually in spring, you can measure to see if the roots need pruning. If you see that roots form a circular ball around the perimeter of the pot, it's time to cut or prune the roots. If tree roots are still contained in the soil, the tree can be returned to the pot and the size can be left for another year.
