Oils in shampoos, lotions linked to breast growth in boys
The boys who used shampoos and lotions containing essential oils of lavender oil and tea tree may end up with breasts enlarged.
The surprising side effect was reported by researchers at the University of Colorado and Department of Environmental Health U.S. National Institutes of Health in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The rare condition known as gynecomastia was observed three children, ages 4, 7 and 10 who developed breasts after expanded use skin lotions, hair gel, shampoo and soap containing natural oils.
"These plant oils, sometimes called "essential oils are added to many health care products, usually by its aroma. The oils are sometimes found in other household products or sold as pure. Tea tree oil is sometimes used in shampoos for head lice, "revealed Jeff Donn Associated Press.
"The three children were taken to their doctors with overdeveloped breasts that looked like the girls precocious puberty. They were great in one case. For each child, doctors could tie the problem only for use for several months natural oil products, "said Donn.
It was unclear whether the oil has led to this problem, but researchers suspect that the chemicals affecting hormonal balance of boys. It seems that mimic estrogen, the female hormone that promotes growth of the breast.
The oils are considered as having touched the girls in the same way, including a 17-month, parents use a soap with lavender to wash the bottle, according to Dr. Clifford Bloch, a hormone specialist in Greenwood Village, Colo., who treated the patients.
"Be careful. I do not give these products to my children," said Bloch.
"On product labels, the oils are sometimes referred by their scientific names: Lavandula angustifolia (lavender oil) and Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree oil). These products do not require approval government to be sold unless they make specific health claims, "revealed Donn.
No researchers, however, called for a ban on these products, taking into account that the problem is rare and disappears when not in use. However, They advise parents to consider the risks of using these products.
