How to replace an internal hard drive laptop

What type of hard drive is a Dell Inspiron 9300 has?
I just sold my old Inspiron 9300 and kept the hard drive to install in a box and use it as an external hard drive. However, I bought and returned two different types (SATA and IDE), none of which corresponds to my drive drive. I'm pretty sure it is PATA or SATA II, either because all the pictures I searched Google for their match. What type of hard disk I? Thank you!
