Tip, tricks and techniques

What are the crystals?
The crystals are structures that are formed from a regular repeating pattern of atoms or molecules related. The crystals grow by a process called nucleation. During nucleation, the atoms or molecules that will crystallize (solute) are dissolved into their individual units in a solvent. The solute particles communicate among themselves and connect with each other. This subunit is larger than an individual particle, for more particles to shrink and in contact with him.
Finally, the crystal nucleus becomes large enough to be outside the solution (crystallizes). Other molecules of the solute continue to attach to the glass surface, thereby increasing the balance or equilibrium is reached between the solute molecules in the crystal and those who remain in solution.
The basic technique
1.Make a saturated solution.
2.Start a garden or grow a seed crystal.
3.Continue growth.
To grow a crystal, is necessary for a solution that maximizes likely that the particles of solute to unite and form a nucleus, which becomes the glass. This means that we want a concentrated solution in both absolute and can dissolve (saturated solution). Sometimes, the nucleation may simply be the result of interactions between the solute particles in solution (called "nucleation unassisted), but sometimes it is better still a sort of meeting place for all particles of solute (assisted nucleation). A rough surface tends to be more attractive to the nucleation surface smooth. For example, a crystal is more likely to begin to form in some rough chain in the flat side of a glass.
Make a saturated solution
It is best to start your crystals with a solution saturated. A more dilute solution will become saturated as the air evaporates some liquid, but the evaporation takes time (days, weeks). You will receive your crystals more quickly if the solution is saturated to begin with. In addition, there may a time when it is necessary to add more liquid crystal solution. If your solution is far from saturated, so they dump their work and actually dissolve the crystals! Make a saturated solution by adding a crystal of solute (eg, alum, sugar, salt) in water solvent (generally, but some recipes may call for other solvents). If you just want to grow bulk crystals or a crystal garden, you can pour the saturated solution onto a substrate (stones, bricks, sponge) Cover the plant with a paper towel or coffee filter to prevent soil, and the liquid evaporates slowly.
The growth of a seed crystal
On the other hand, if you try to push a larger single crystal, it will be necessary to obtain a seed crystal. A method to obtain a seed glass is to pay a small amount of saturated solution on a plate, dropped evaporation, and scratch crystals form at the bottom to be used as seed. Another method is to pour the saturated solution in a very smooth container (like a bottle glass) and suspended from a hard object (like a piece of rope) into the liquid. Small crystals begin to grow in the chain, which can be used as seed crystals.
Crystal Growth and Clean
If the seed crystal is a string, pour the liquid into a clean container (if not possibly grow crystals in the glass and compete with the crystal) to suspend the string in the liquid, cover the container with a towel paper or coffee filter (do not seal with a lid!), and continue to grow the crystal. Pour the liquid into a clean container every time you see the growth of crystals in the container.
If you chose a seed of a badge attached to a fishing line nylon (too soft to be attractive for crystals and their seeds can not grow without competition) to suspend the crystal in a clean container with a saturated solution, and growing your crystal in the same way that seeds were originally a string.
Keep your treasures
The crystals were made of a water (aqueous) solution dissolved in moist air. Keep your fine crystal storing them in a dry container, closed. If desired, wrap in paper to keep them dry and prevent dust build up on him. Some crystals can be protected by the application of acrylic coatings (such as Future floor wax), although the application of acrylic dissolves the outer layer of glass.
